Despite the fact that cross-stitch embroidery has existed at least since the Middle Ages, it confidently still holds the lead in modern types of needlework. Traditionally used to decorate household items such as table linen, this hand-stitching technique is now often found as framed paintings, often with whimsical, anachronistic messages or motifs. Regardless of the plot of the embroidery or the skill level of the needlewoman, cross stitching can be affordable, easy to learn, and a fun threading leisure time. What is cross stitch? Cross stitch follows a mosaic pattern, making it almost the forerunner of the digital pixel. Since it consists mainly of X-stitches, the overall design usually looks geometric and square. Most cross stitching is done using colored cotton floss - on woven fabrics that, in fact, due to the weaving of threads, have a built-in mesh for guiding each stitch. For beginners, it is recommended to use Aida cotton fabric in different sizes due to its obvious holes and relatively open weave, but cross stitching can be applied to fine linen or uniform fabrics as well. Cotton thread for embroidery - floss - is usually sold in skeins of six strands. Most cross stitch patterns require dividing such a skein into two or three threads for embroidery. Cross stitch types Cross-stitching uses only a few basic stitches: full stitch (X-shape), half stitch-half-cross (slanted line), 1/4 stitch (from corner to middle X), 3/4 stitch (half-stitch plus quarter stitch) and reverse stitch - backstitch (straight line). Cross stitch charts use color or black and white symbol grids that can be recalculated and applied to fabrics of any size - they are like a map for a finished design. For beginner needlewomen, it may be easier to follow the pattern that is applied directly on the selected material for cross stitching - this eliminates the need for counting and mentally transferring colors and lines from paper to fabric.
